HPPI Grants Led by Schools of Medicine
The lack of diversity in medicine affects the profession and our patients. Studies show that minority physicians are more likely to provide care to minority populations, practice in underserved areas, and/or serve patients from their own ethnic group. Also, physicians from low socioeconomic backgrounds provide a disproportionate amount of service to patients who are minorities, poor, and Medicaid beneficiaries. A disproportionate pool of minority physicians exacerbates health care access and delivery problems in both minority and low socioeconomic patient populations. Improving the health status of all Americans depends in some degree on ensuring access to physicians who reflect the nation's increasingly diverse population. Moreover, physicians must have the skills and experiences to work comfortably and proficiently with patients from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
The Institute of Medicine report, Unequal Treatment, found that lack of diversity in the healthcare field was a leading factor in the disproportionately high mortality rate among minorities. The research also showed that African American and Hispanic physicians see significantly more people from those populations than do other doctors. While gains have been made in encouraging students who are members of underrepresented minority (URM) groups to apply to medical school, the primary reason for minority under representation in medicine-the limited number of academically well-prepared students with diverse backgrounds in the applicant pool-remains.
