Increasing the racial/ethnic diversity of both the nurse workforce and allied health professionals are key measures necessary to ensure the availability of a workforce appropriate to meet the primary care and public health needs of the population. A rapidly growing racial/ethnic minority population and relatively slow growth in the number of minorities as RNs and in the allied health professions have become increasingly evident.

Despite their relatively small numbers among the nursing workforce, minority nurses are significant contributors to the provision of health care services in this country and leaders in the development of models of care that address the unique needs of racial/ethnic minority populations. Increasing nursing workforce diversity requires a national effort involving the public and private sectors. Initiatives must involve the educational system that produces the nurses as well as the employment settings in which they work. In order for these efforts to be effective and sustainable there must be consistent, visible support from government and the private sector and the community.

In the allied health care workforce, statistics from the Allied and Auxiliary Health Care Workforce Project from the Center for the Health Professions at University of California, San Francisco, indicates that allied health workers make up an estimated 60% of the U.S. health care workforce, however minorities comprise only about 10% of allied health care professionals.
